Interview with Sicknature

Sicknature has been in the game for a hot minute producing talent such as Onyx, PMD to name a few.  From overseas, Sicknature is part of the production team Snowgoons. With "Copenhagen Kaiju" freshly out the gate under the Goonmusick imprint, I get the chance to interview Sicknature to discuss the hip hop game and his new project.

Ty: Sicknature, you're part of the production group Snowgoons. How did the group form?

Sicknature: Snowgoons was formed by Det & DJ Illegal in 1999. I started working with them in 2008 and joined the group officially as a producer in 2011.

Ty: Who are your musical influences in production?

Sicknature: I'm influenced by everything from Metallica to Bjork to classic hip-hop.

Ty: What is your production set up?

Sicknature: I mostly just use software. But I also have a sampler, a turntable and some keyboards that I use.

Ty: Take us to a Sicknature beat and how is it different from making beats with Snowgoons?

Sicknature: The only difference is that Snowgoons don’t add ideas to beats, I do on my own. You can still hear my sound in some Snowgoons beats.

Ty: You released your solo project "Nature of the Contaminated" through the Snowgoons label Goon Musick. Was the audience receptive to the album?

Sicknature: Yeah. Got a lot of good feedback on that album. I think many people could relate to the topics.

Ty: You worked with credible artists such as Onyx, Ghostface, M.O.P., among others. Is working with American artists difficult since you are from Denmark?

Sicknature: Not at all. It´s easy with the internet.

Ty: You produced 7 tracks on PMD's "Business Mentality". How was it working with PMD?

Sicknature: I was only involved with a few of those beats. But working with PMD is always great. He has been a big influence over the years.

Ty: What do you look for in an artist to do production with?

Sicknature: I don’t really look for anything. I do the beat and the rest comes natural.

Ty: It seems like European producers still embrace the hip hop boom bap 90's era sound. With the evolution of production in the United States, what made you decided to stick with the boom bap formula?

Sicknature: I grew up with that type of sound, so it´s natural for me to add that to my music. With that said, I don´t stick to a particular sound. I come up with what I feel when I'm in the moment - usually it takes a boombap direction.

Ty: Let's get to your latest joint "The Rapper, The Producer". Was rapping something you always wanted to do along with producing?

Sicknature: I started rapping. I only started producing because I got tired of rapping over instrumental versions.

Ty: Your EP "Copenhagen Kaiju", who we have as far as production and features.

Sicknature: I produced the EP. I have features from Pacewon, Ruste Juxx, Hellfire, Face & Napoleon Da Legend.

Ty: What can we expect from "Copenhagen Kaiju"?

Sicknature: My latest release (Nature Of The Contaminated from 2013) was very political and deep. I kinda needed to step away from that a bit and create something a little less serious. The new EP is more or less just hardcore hip-hop and even though I am proud of my 2013 release, I believe the new songs will be a bit easier to digest.

Ty: For future artists that want to work with you, any social media handles they can contact you with?

Sicknature: For serious inquiries hit up booking@sicknature.dk - thank you
