The host, End of the Weak returned to conduct this final show and were on point as usual keeping the crowd engaged. Vice Verses especially was on fire the whole afternoon and the crowd fed off his energy for the entire show. After some opening DJ sets Haddy Racks would hit the stage as the first performer and do his thing followed by a dope performance from Napoleon Da Legend.
After that, veteran Milano who has worked with the D.I.T.C. crew hit the stage and ran through some dope records including his past single “Rep For The Slums”. After some dope sets by DJ JS1 and Tony Touch, DJ Premier would set up on stage. MC Eiht would hit the stage next as they performed some classics and new songs off their album “Which Way Iz West”.
It was an honor to have a west coast legend like Eiht hit the stage for a rare east coast performance from his incredible new album and he did not disappoint when he broke into his hit classic song, “Straight Up Menace”. His set was short and Primo and Eiht have great chemistry and the crowd was into this one. Next up was the queen MC Lyte who showed why she’s considered one of, if not the greatest female mc of all time.
Saying MC Lyte has a perfect stage presence would be an understatement. She controls the stage with her moves and words and the crowd, especially the ladies were into her every step as she showed she hasn’t lost a beat and as she said is more than just the lady from the BET awards. Lyte would give any artist a run for their money and is both a veteran and someone who has shown she can be successful outside of music and still hit the stage and remind you who she is
The Rocksteady crew would hit the stage next after a poetic introduction by MyVerse and Crazy Legs would announce that he was stepping down as president of Rocksteady. He named female Rocksteady Crew member Feenx as the new president who would take the Rocksteady Crew into the future as she took the stage next to Crazy Legs and other instrumental pieces from the crew. The crew would hit the stage next and show off their phenomenal bboy and bgirl skills and even Crayz Legs got into the action.
Closing out the night was a tribute to the fallen legend, Prodigy of Mobb Deep by his partner Havoc. He was joined on stage by Big Noyd as they came out to “Give Up the Goods” and ran through a number of Mobb Deep songs. It was a fitting tribute to Prodigy and a fitting end to 40 years of a great tradition. It truly is Rocksteady For Life and shout out to them as well as the City Parks Foundation for allowing events like SummerStage to take place as it makes New York City the place to be in the summer.
