Horizon Zero Dawn Review (PS4)
Horizon Zero Dawn is one of the prettiest games I've ever played. It's a unique visual and play experience that's different from any game I've played in recent memory. Horizon is already a masterpiece in just it's first hour, it's just that great. Whether you play it on PS4 or the PS4 Pro, it's a journey that your sure to enjoy.
Horizon is the story of Aloy coming up in a time where robotic dinosaurs inhabit the Earth. Your weapons are mostly a bow and arrow but these work surprisingly well. As in many other games it features an upgrade system and the combat is deeper than it first appears. The world itself is massive with at least 40 hours of content or more if you decide to complete all of the side quest.
The variety in both the enemy types and environments is diverse. You'll never feel like you're seeing the same thing over and over and just when you master one technique, something new comes along that challenges you in a different way. Every fight requires it's own strategy and a one on one can quickly turn to you being attacked by five enemies at once.
The story isn't as epic as some other first party Sony exclusives but I love Aloy as a character. Her dialogue when she speaks has a bit of a sarcastic overtone. She's a great new addition to Sony's already long list of great female characters and brings the same realism aspect that Ellie did in The Last of Us.
For this to be a completely different genre than Killzone, which is developer Guerrilla Games previous series, they hit this one out of the park. It's rare to see such a huge tone switch from one series to the next but Horizon Zero Dawn is as much as a major upgrade as Uncharted was to Crash Bandicoot. I for one can't wait to see where the series goes in any possible sequels or even prequel to what happened to shape the world of Horizon.
In a year of what seems to be hit PlayStation exclusives such as Nioh, Tales of Berseria and the upcoming Persona 5, Horizon Zero Dawn takes it's rightful place on that list. In between all the other games coming out this year, make sure you don't miss this one. 2017 is definitely looking like an awesome year for gamers.
