Resident Evil 7: Biohazard Review (PS4)

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is a new but familiar experience that has been long overdue. The past few games in the series started to rely too much on action sequences and Resident Evil 6 may have had more explosions and helicopter fights than an Uncharted game. This latest and first entry for current-gen systems moves the series into a first person perspective. It’s a huge risk but works for the better.

The atmosphere of RE7 is great. It’s a throwback to the original game where you’re trapped alone in a house, this time at the mercy of the deranged Baker family. Outside of the Baker’s, there aren’t your usual assortment of hunters, dogs or zombies but there other enemies you'll occasionally encounter. Because of this, it makes the game unpredictable in the way that when you least expect it, you find yourself remembering you have a shotgun and no bullets to kill the thing coming towards you.

While not spoiling anything I will say that as the game goes on, you find more and more callbacks to what Resident Evil is as a series and the fact it’s in first person just feels normal at that point. You’ll find item boxes, and your usual assortment or weapons such as the knife, handgun and flamethrower. The videotape sequences work well as a cleaver way to introduce a flashback in having you actually play through the sequence itself rather than a cutscene. There are also collectibles such as hidden bobbleheads and antique coins for you to find, the latter serving a purpose in-game as well.

I haven’t tried RE7 in VR mode yet outside of the Beginning Hour and Kitchen demo's previously released, but will on my second play through. I will say though, just from the demo’s alone and playing through the full game, this is the type of experience I believe VR was made for, unless you’ve never wanted to experience what it was like to live through a horror movie. The fact that VR only exists on the PS4 right now should make the PS4 version of RE7 the one to get for those lucky enough to find a Playstation VR out in the wild.

In the ashes of the canceled Silent Hills game, fans have gotten a great new Resident Evil game which seems like a combination of all the ideas we thought were lost with P.T. Capcom has delivered a winner and RE7 deserves to be experienced by those who are and have not yet been introduced to the series as it's a great way to start.
