Duck Down BBQ 2015 Recap

2015 Duck Down BBQ Recap
By: J. Burke

The 2015 version of the annual Duck Down BBQ was held in Brownsville, Brooklyn at Betsy Head Park as part of the SummerStage series of events.  Artist such as Boot Camp Clik legends Smif N Wessun, Heltah Skeltah and Black Moon performed along with some newer acts as well.  I didn’t catch any of the names of the opening acts but when the show did start it was past the 7 pm point and it was scheduled to end at 9pm.

Peter Rosenberg of Hot 97 was the host for the night; though I’m not sure how long he stuck around once Boot Camp hit the stage to close the show.  CJ Fly and Kirk Knight of Pro Era both opened up the show performing separate sets and I was way more into it than what I had seen from CJ Fly at the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival the year before.  At the end of Kirk Knight’s set, the rest of the Pro Era hit the stage, minus Joey Bada$$ and after that was finished Statik Selektah warmed up the crowd before the main act.

Sean Price was first to hit the stage for the BCC and brought along his daughter who adorably spit some of her dad’s bars on stage acappella style before he started his set.  We also got a surprise appearance from Royal Flush who performed 90’s classics  “Iced Down Medallions” and “Worldwide”.  He also shouted out Chinx Drugz who recently passed away.  For those that don’t know, Chinx used the same sample as Flush’s Worldwide single for his song “I’m a Cokeboy”.  After that Rockness hit the stage to join Sean P and run through some Heltah Skeltah songs, though regrettably nothing from the Nocturnal.

Smif N Wessun hit the stage after and ran through a number of hits such as “Let’s Git it On”, “Timz n Hood Chek” and “Sound Bwoy Burriel”.  Buckshot came out not too soon after to run through his Black Moon classics and was joined by 5ft.  The crew also took time to showcase their new female signee Young M.A. and let her prove herself to the crowd.  By the time the show was coming towards the end, the stage was full of artist and family alike as a few more hits such as “Bucktown” from Smif N Wessun and “Who Got The Props” from Black Moon.  At the end before the night was over, Rockness had one last word and made sure he gave respect to fallen underground legend Pumpkinhead, who had passed away a few days earlier.

This year’s BBQ and show was another success and everyone that came out seemed to have a good time.  It’s too bad that some of our hip hop brothers such as J. Arch, Chinx and Pumpkinhead are no longer here to enjoy this with us, but it’s a good thing that we can keep the movement going in their honor.  This is one of many SummerStage events going on this summer that all fans should check out, and I hope they’re all as great as this one.  Check out my Instagram for more event photos.
